MASH is all about collaborative learning.

Are you ready to MASH? Look at the list below and take the MASH test!

I have a computer (MAC or Windows).
I have Skype, Yahoo BB, iChat or other online chat software.
I am currently a Bham student, graduate of the Bham programme, a Bham tutor, or a CELS member.
I am lonely. I want to study with others.
I have a 'I have done all my readings and I just have a few questions... will someone please help me!' kind of feeling.
  I want better marks.
I want to share my experiences of what I've learned with other Bhammers.
I want to hear about how others are using their MA in their lives.
I would love to be challenged on my ideas so that I can defend my essays better.
I want to read more, but it takes so long to find all those articles!
I have an hour or so a week that I would love to help someone and receive help on my studies.
I want to learn to apply what I've learnt to what I do.

What is Skype and how can we utilize it?

- is just like a telephone but it works on your computer.
- You can talk with up to 9 people at the same time.
- You can send documents while talking.
- You can use Skype to 'be in the same room' as your fellow students.

To use Skype, you need:

- A computer - either MAC or Windows
- Internet access
- A headphone set (headphone and microphone). Some newer computers have them built right in.
- Skype software installed. It's free.

Skype study group tips:

* We have used three main methods of conducting a session:
1. Review all the readings to confirm our understanding of the material.
2. Focus on how the readings relate to our teaching context.
3. No agenda, free discussion of problems, essay questions, progress of essay, etc.

* At the start of a module, we produce a reading schedule trying to cover all the readings in 10 weeks
* We meet once or twice a week for 60 -90 minutes.

* We alternate leaders whereby one member reviews his highlighted points paragraph by paragraph.
* We use standard language to signpost where we are: On page 64, look at the 8th line that starts with by the time... I highlighted "Traditionally the... teacher..."
* When there are multiple readings for the next session, the next leader usually announces what order he plans to do the readings.

Special things we do:

* As someone has completed his essay outline, he sends it to everyone and then talks it through, explaining and defending his approach on the "hot seat"..
* As the final essay draft is completed, those colleagues with time offer feedback on both content and layout or typos to one another..
* Colleagues exchange articles related to one another's essay questions.
* We occasionally photocopy or pdf readings and mail them to those in need.
