I am wondering if anyone can recommend some books about writing research. I am only now realizing the extensive process of what it will take to write a dissertation proposal. Two books are recommended in the Guide to Independent Study to help with doing research and writing it up. I was wondering if anyone has other recommendations for writing about research as "Writing Up Research" written by Weissberg, R and Buker, S. was published in 1990 and is difficult to purchase. Are there any other helpful books which other students have used to write their dissertation?

Hello Rachel, I'm starting

Hello Rachel,
I'm starting my diss next month and I too will need to find something on this. I will look out for some kind of book(s) and if I find something, I'll let you know.

Dissertation proposal

Hey Rachel,

I started my dissertation from Module 2. Actually my Mod 1 paper is also relevant, but what I actually did was keep a central theme through my modules so that by the time I get to my my diss, most of the groundwork will already be laid out. Each time I wrote an essay, I made sure that I was adhering to the common thread that I had decided on. I still have to understand all the material, but basically by the time I finish mod 6, my dissertation will already be finished. If you are still trying to decide a topic, use 5 and 6 as the groundwork and make it relevant.
My tutor knew exactly what I was doing throughout the whole thing. I'm on mod 6 now, and (they don't get easier) I'm gearing up for a good section of my diss using this paper. My tutor gave me some good advice for some of the mods, but my decision to go this route was mine alone. I have now a pretty solid understanding of my dissertation. The writing is going to take some time to formulate, and there is research involved, but it has really helped to do it this way.
So if you have any idea of what you want to do, start it now. It will make things a lot easier. I didn't hand in my proposal till after I handed in mod 4 paper (there is just no time!). If you have any ideas you want to bounce off someone, I'll be more than happy to help. I'll see if I can help with references as well. Throw some ideas out and see where they take you! Make it relevant to your situation as well.
