2 high schools in Osaka keep me busy with my 'International Awareness' classes, TBL with content along the lines of Education for Sustainable Development. I wanna be one of those dudes that can rattle off findings from the research using the metalanguage in a humble way, and then turn those insights onto my own classes in order to subtlety empower the learners to go out there and use their language to make the world a better place.

Originally a planning Engineer in construction from England I now teach English in a private institute in Brasilia, Brazil. I am the Mentor of the school made up 25 Brazilian teacher and I like researching on vocabulary and language learning strategies.

I have written many articles but my main work has been in lexical notebooks and the teaching of more lexical instruction/approach.

I have run a teacher association for many years and give teacher training for whever needs it such as different government agencies and local universities and publishers.

I am married and have 2 teenage chilldren so I´m no spring chicken ;). I love dancing, eating Brazilian traditional food and dancing to Brazilian music. I crazy about Liverpool Football club.

I heard about the B´ham MA after grabbing a cheeky lift of Terry Shorthall and he twisted me arm into doing the course. Well, I tell it like that anyway lol.

Hello Everyone,
Yes. Finished. And what an experience. I got so much out of it, and for those who have just started, get the most out of the program you can. How? Well, I took most of my papers and either had them published or presented them at Local and International conferences. I got my first two published (in-house...not bad, but not referred either...) and presented on Discourse Analysis (CDA) at the Japan Society of Language Sciences, Presented on Task Motivation (Mix of modules 2 and 3) at the JALT CUE Conference and most recently (Paper 4 CDA parts of it combined with Paper 5) presented at the International Learners Autonomy Conference...and if I can do it, so can you! I got started...uh...rather late on professional development, but the motivation I got from the U of B program was truely inpiring. I met some great people on the course and this forum is one way to keep up those contacts...so thanks for getting this up and running. Currently I am researching task completion and motivation and teacher training. Personal level: into mountain biking and 1/2 marathon racing!

Currently I'm a mixed mode student. I started as a distance student living and working in Toyama, Japan in April 2006. I was working as an ALT in two public junior high schools and two elementary schools. I joined up with Steve, Mark and Anthony on skype after Hiroshima 2006. Meeting with them every week helped me stay motivated and focused. It was also an brilliant opportunity to share ideas and collaborate! I'm not sure I could have gotten through those modules without our group!

After a 9 month hiatus, I'm now on-campus doing the last three modules from Jan-April. As an on-campus student I have access to a different variety of modules. I'm currently enrolled in:
--Teacher Training
--Intercultural Communication
--English as a Global Language
--Cognitive Linguistics and Second Language Teaching (auditing)
--Research Methods (required)

After April, I hope to do my dissertation research in Tamil Nadu, South India! I'm particularly interested in the English language teaching for disadvantaged students in Tamil Nadu. There is a huge discrepancy regarding who has access to English education and often this discrepancy is tied both to family economics and social background (caste/community). Even though English is considered a national language and is used in the government, media, business and tourist industry--a huge percentage of the population is not being given access to adequate English education. Some argue that inadequate second language education is supporting the continuation of caste oppression.

Thoughts or comments about my ideas and research are most welcome!

My nickname: Sista K or Shakespeare (thanks Steve!!)

I have recently returned from a lengthy teaching in stint in East Asia. My experience had been in EFL and now I am in Canada writing my dissertation focusing on ESL contexts.

I am currently interested in literacy as a social determinant of health. My specific area of interest is federal (Canadian) strategies for the promotion of health literacy amongst new arrival to Canada particularly those with a non-English L1 background. Also interested in strategies employed by ESL learners to acquire and improve their health literacy.
